In today's market, people (especially EXECUTIVES) need to think of a job hunting plan like they would think of a business development or PR/marketing plan for their company or own business. A smart business owner or company chief does not settle on just ONE plan of attack or one channel like "just sales" or "just marketing" to drive revenues and profits. Most companies and even small businesses have a sales staff, a marketing and advertising staff (that then also goes off in a bunch of directions --from direct mail and display ads to website development, online marketing and social networking and in some cases, event production and charity involvement) and in some cases there is also a PR/communications staff or outsourced PR firm's services. I believe that senior executives demanding a six figure salary package must also work their own plan (of driving revenue) like a business. Executives NOW need to work their job search within a variety of different channels --i.e.: personal networking, online social networking, personal publicity and branding (for the OSN stuff and beyond to build out a robust "Web 2.0" presence which can include a personal professional website, well developed blog, audio blog, video interviews etc.), direct personal publicity and marketing and 3rd party endorsement (as in an Agent or Personal Publicist --a professional outside of an executives usual inner circle of recycled networking contacts who can put a different spin on their background and get out in the market to seek and find and get a foot in the door with a company by literally selling their client's talent (skill, experience and value proposition, etc.).
Job hunting is a process and well I just think that Executives need to be more aggressive and literally think outside the normal job search box! Whether that means more (personal) PR and better Web 2.0, hiring someone to get to track down good opportunities (as in an ECMG AGENT -perhaps?) or door to door knocking (to inquire within if you will). In today's market you can't wait for people to ALWAYS come to you, you have to go to them and get them to see you in lights! YES, there is a LOT of great opportunity (believe it or not - and I am sure you do given all the private capital that's out and about in our markets these days - just crazy isn't' it?), BUT you can't EXPECT anyone to just reach out and grab you. You kind of have to put your hand up and say "hey, over here --here I am!"
